The Chinese Room, a CRYENGINE licensee, is an award-winning game development studio, known for games like Dear Esther and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. They are currently working hard on their next title, a PlayStation 4 exclusive, called Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture.
“It’s an open-world game with a very non-linear story,” says Dan Pinchbeck, Creative Director at The Chinese Room. “It’s presenting some unique challenges in that we are not looking at the normal open-world model of having linear quests within a non-linear environment, but instead are trying to create something where you have much more freedom of movement.” Experienced from a first-person perspective, the studio’s usual flair for environmental storytelling is complemented by outstanding production values and a memorable new soundtrack.
“So how do we get a really complicated, deep story to continuously make sense and be dramatically interesting whilst there is no control over the order in which the player might engage with it? Fortunately CRYENGINE really lets us ramp up the presentational quality of the game to an incredibly high level, so the degree of sophistication we have with audio and visual storytelling can really support that.”
